Hello everyone and welcome to my blog! Today I would like to start with a series of articles in which I will recommend you TV shows that will help you learning English.

As you may know, in some countries (like Holland or Portugal) TV shows and films are usually not dubbed into the local language, like we are used to in Spain. Probably, people from these countries are some of the best English speakers in the world, and if you ask them WHY their English is so good, they will most likely tell you that it is not from studying English a lot. One of the main reasons is that watching almost everything in a foreign language (English) since you are a little child gives you the opportunity to get in touch and learn a language without almost notice it.

Watching series or films will help you apply what you are actually learning while you have fun, so it seems to me that it is time to begin and forget about the excuses. Some students complain that they are not ready yet to watch television in English, but the truth is that there are so many different shows that you will surely find one that will adapt to your level and preferences. If you feel really lost, you can try and put English subtitles (I don’t recommend to use Spanish subtitles), but eventually you will have to jump into the pool, be brave and watch them without any subtitles. The more you do this, the more you’ll find your English is improving.

The best part about watching TV shows in English is that you are learning real life English, so you’ll be learning the language that we ACTUALLY speak. Plus, it is a FUN and EASY habit to build.

Now, let’s get started!

  1. Breaking Bad [Level: Upper intermediate]

You’ve probably heard of Breaking Bad, as it is one of the most popular TV shows of all time, and for good reason! This show is about Walter White, a high school chemistry teacher who is diagnosed with lung cancer. In order to provide for his family and pay for his medical bills, he decides to start developing and selling methamphetamine with a former student.

It’s a one of a kind show, I loved it! It has great, crazy plot twists that make it impossible to stop watching, great acting and beautiful visuals.

In this TV show you’ll learn criminal and drug talk, specially. Jesse Pinkman, one of the main characters, uses a lot of slang; but Walter White talks rather normally.

  1. Modern Family [Lever: Lower intermediate]

A hilarious show that makes a commentary on how the traditional American family has completely changed, showing you what could perhaps be considered “typical” nowadays. It is composed of a grandfather, Jay Pritchett, married to a hot, young Colombian woman who still doesn’t quite fit in with the American culture; his gay son, who has adopted a Vietnamese baby; and his daughter, married to a funny man and mother of three children.

In this TV show you’ll learn family talk and lots of jokes. Gloria, the wife of Jay, has a strong Spanish accent so maybe this will help you understand her better than the others.
