In a previous post, we talked about part 2 of the Cambridge Exam (Reading and Use of English).

Today I want to do the same with Part 4. As you may know in this part you have to modify a sentence using the given word, and then complete a gap with your own words (most five, including the given word) and keeping the same meaning of the original sentence.

This part may be complicated but the more you practice the better you will get at this.

In this post I will show the most common rephrasing structures you will find and also a link to some exercises so you can practice later.

Original Sentence includes Pay attention to
Final Sentence will turn into Take notice of
Given Word OF
Original Sentence Sara paid no attention to my advine
Sentence to complete Sara____________________________ advice
Result Sara took no notice of my advice

 

Original Sentence includes Succeed in + ing
Final Sentence will turn into Manage to + inf
Given Word IN
Original Sentence They managed to escape from prison
Sentence to complete They ________________________________prison
Result They suceeded in escaping from prison

 

Original Sentence includes Lend
Final Sentence will turn into Borrow
Given Word MIND
Original Sentence You can borrow my car
Sentence to complete I _________________________ my car
Result I don´t mind lending you my car

 

Original Sentence includes Adjective + Enough
Final Sentence will turn into Too + adjective
Given Word ENOUGH
Original Sentence The room is too small
Sentence to complete The room ______________________
Result The room isn´t big enough
Original Sentence The bridge is too narrow for lorries
Sentence to complete The bridge _______________________ lorries
Result The bridge isn´t wide enough for lorries

 

Original Sentence includes Take care of
Final Sentence will turn into Look after
Given Word OF
Original Sentence Jane used to look after me in summer
Sentence to complete Jane used ___________________ me in summer.
Result Jane used to take care of me in summer.

 

Original Sentence includes Regret + in
Final Sentence will turn into I wish + Past Participle
Given Word NOT
Original Sentence Jane used to look after me in summer
Sentence to copmplete I regret drinking last night
Result I ___________________ last night

 

Original Sentence includes Fault
Final Sentence will turn into Blame (someone) for + ing
Given Word FOR
Original Sentence The team said it was my fault we lost
Sentence to copmplete The team _______________________
Result The team blamed me for losing

 

Probably you will notice these sentences shorter than the ones included in the exam, but they are simplified so you may notice the change easily. The rest would be extra information as part of the sentence such as clauses or phrases.
