Selkies

Selkies

Selkies are shape-shifting creatures that can fake the forms of seals and beautiful people. In some myths, they are gentle creatures that dance in the moonlight on beaches, but in others, they seek unsatisfied people to seduce whether they are married or not.

Selkies were mythical creatures that could transform themselves from seal to human form and back again. The legend of the selkie apparently originated on the Orkney and Shetland Islands where selch or selk(ie) is the Scots word for seal.

Tales once abounded of a man who found a beautiful female selkie sunbathing on a beach, stole her skin and forced her to become his wife and bear his children, only for her to find the skin years later and escape back to seal form and the sea.

THE LOCH NESS MONSTER (‘NESSIE’)

One of Scotland’s most famous unsolved mysteries is that of the Loch Ness Monster .

The large dinosaur-like creature is said to live in Loch Ness in the Scottish Highlands. The first recorded sighting of the monster was nearly 1,500 years ago when a giant beast is said to have leaped out of a lake near Inverness and eaten a local farmer. Since then the myth of the Loch Ness Monster has magnified.

In 1934, a London doctor snapped a photograph that seemed to show a dinosaur-looking creature with a long neck emerging from the water. Dozens of sightings have since been claimed, many of which have turned out to be hoaxes. In 2009, a newspaper reader claims to have spotted ‘Nessie’ whilst browsing Google Earth’s satellite photos of Loch Ness.

Regardless of the truth, the suggestion of the monster’s existence makes Loch Ness one of Scotland’s most popular tourist attractions with thousands visiting it shores each year with the hope of catching a glimpse of the famous monster.

Kelpie

Kelpie

If you ever go to Scotland and are driving from Edinburgh to Stirling or vice versa on the M9 and halfway at Falkirk you will see two 30 metre tall sculptures of two horses heads. The biggest horse sculptures in the world, these are The Kelpies.

What are Kelpies you will ask; well they are shape changing aquatic spirit. It is a supernatural water horse that was said to haunt Scotland s lochs and rivers. The kelpie would appear to victims as a lost grey or white pony, its main feature to tell that it was a kelpie was its dripping mane. It would enchant people to ride on its back and then take them down to a watery grave.

But there is some good news: a kelpie has a weak spot – its bridle. Anyone who can get hold of a kelpie’s bridle will have command over it and any other kelpie. A captive kelpie is said to have the strength of at least 10 horses and the stamina of many more, and is highly prized. It is rumoured that the MacGregor clan have a kelpies bridle, passed down through the generations and said to have come from an ancestor who took it from a kelpie near Loch Slochd.
