Today is St. Patrick’s Day!!  It is regarded as a religious and cultural celebration. It honours Ireland’s patron St. Patrick and the date marks the day of the death of the saint. It wasn’t until the 17th Century that it was made an official feast day though.   St. Patrick’s Day as we know it has not always been celebrated the same way.  It is meant to celebrate the culture and heritage of the Irish population.

People wear green attire and attend parades and festivals on this day. New York and Dublin hold the biggest parades in the world. Half a million people are expected to line the streets for the Dublin parade, while around 150,000 revellers will attend the New York display.

Church services are usually attended but as with all religious holidays the younger generations are seen less and less at church and this day is just another excuse to party and drink alcohol. Not to mention it has been highly commercialized.  You can buy t-shirts, pins, hats and other green things in nearly any shop.

Do you have any plans to celebrate today?
